Birth Control Pills
The Pill is a way to prevent pregnancy by combining a hormone, estrogen, and another hormone, progestin. There are two main types of Pill: a combination pill and a progestin-only pill (sometimes called the mini-pill). Combination pills are most commonly used, but progestin-only pills may be better for some people. The most important thing to remember about the birth control pills is that it is only effective if you take it every day, without missing any doses. If you get very severe diarrhoea (6 to 8 watery poos in 24 hours), it can affect the Pill and make it stop working. If this happens, you should continue taking your pill but use additional contraception, such as condoms, until you recover.
Some people find that the Pill helps clear up acne, possibly by slowing overactive oil glands. Others find that the Pill makes their periods lighter and more regular, or that it stops them altogether. It can also lower the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer, and reduce hot flashes during the transition to menopause (perimenopause).
Can I get pregnant while on the Pill?
The pill is very effective at preventing pregnancy, but it won't protect you from sexually transmitted infections (STDs). You should always use a condom during penis-in-vagina sex to protect yourself.
You can start the Pill at any time during your menstrual cycle, though some special guidance is available if you've had a miscarriage or abortion or if you have a very short menstrual cycle. There's also different guidance for people who have a family history of blood clots, liver disease, or certain kinds of migraine headaches.
If you're not sure whether the Pill is right for you, speak to your GP or nurse. Your doctor will ask about your lifestyle, health, and medical history to work out the best type of pill for you. Some people with no health insurance can get the Pill for free from a family planning clinic.
Pills need to be taken at the same time each day, and it's good to have a regular routine to help you remember. If you're not sure how to remember to take them, try setting an alarm on your phone or asking a friend to remind you. You can also sign up for a text reminder service that can send you an alert when it's time to take your pill.
Can the pill cause problems?
All medicines have side effects, but they're usually not serious. Depending on the type of pill, they might include things like nausea and tiredness. They can also increase the risk of developing a fatty liver. Some types of pills can make your breasts grow larger and may cause fluid retention, especially in the first few months. This can lead to enlarged breast tissue, which often goes away once you stop taking the pill or when you stop using hormonal birth control. Some pills can also lead to anemia by making your period heavier or more regular.
