How to Properly Clean Your Driveway
Your driveway is the main entrance to your home and a reflection of how well you maintain your property. An unsightly, stained, or deteriorating driveway can detract from the overall appearance of your home and lower its value. Driveway cleaning is an affordable and easy way to improve your property’s appearance and increase your curb appeal.
The first step in drive way cleaning is to clear away any large debris such as sticks, leaves, or trash. This can be done by hand or with a leaf blower set on low power. Once the debris is removed you can sweep the area to remove any remaining dirt and dust. You should also remove any weeds that have grown in and around the driveway. If you choose to use a chemical cleaner to treat the weeds make sure that you follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions and apply it in a well-ventilated area and cover any nearby plants and flowers.
If your driveway is made from concrete, pavers, or asphalt you can clean it using a pressure washer with a high-pressure setting. If you do choose to use a pressure washer be aware that it can be dangerous and always follow the safety precautions on the label. For example, you should wear a mask to protect yourself from harmful fumes and be careful not to damage your driveway with the high-pressure water jets.
Stains from oil, mud, and other substances can be a challenge to remove from your driveway. You can try scrubbing them with a stiff-bristle brush and a garden hose but they may require the help of specialized chemical cleaners to break down the soil and stain. For example, a rust stain can be removed by mixing distilled white vinegar or muriatic acid with water and applying it to the rust spot. Then, scrub the area with a stiff brush and rinse the surface thoroughly.
You can also use a special oxidation inhibitor to prevent stains from returning. Once the stains are gone, you can choose to coat the surface of your driveway with a concrete sealer to protect it from further weathering and spills. You can purchase a variety of different types and colors of concrete sealers. Just be sure to choose a sealer that is safe for the material your driveway is made from. For example, a rubberized or polyurethane sealer is not recommended for use on brick or natural stone. These types of sealers can be slippery when wet and could potentially damage your driveway. Be sure to test any new sealer on an inconspicuous area of your driveway before applying it to the entire surface.
